Javadekar: Autonomy for Educational Institutions won't Lead to Privatization

  • HRD Minister confirmed that that full autonomy will not lead to fee hike or privatization of the institutes.
  • The Centre will continue to provide grants and support to these institutes like earlier.

Various institutions have across the country includingJawaharlal Nehru University- JNUhas been granted full autonomy by the ministry. As perHRD ministry, the autonomy of all these institutions will not lead tofee hikes or privatization of education.The government will continue to support these institutions like before. However, the autonomy will provide the institutions with more flexibility and freedom.

As per the reports, theUnion governmentwill continue to provide grants and fund the salaries of the faculty in these institutions. Javadekar also said that full autonomy provides institutions with a freedom to undertakeacademic initiativeson their own, introduce new courses etc. It also provides them with the freedom to conduct more research and seek foreign collaborations.

University Grants Commission- UGChas granted full autonomy to 60 institutions across the country, out of which there are 5 central universities and 21 state universities. However, UGCfaced a lot of opposition as some education institutions thought that this by providing autonomy they are going to privatize the institutions. There was even a protest from the faculty ofDelhi Universityas they considered this as changed funding policies of the government.

According to theHRD Minister, the autonomy will help in the achievingglobal recognitionfor these institutes and lay doubts at rest by confirming that there is not going to be any changes in thefee structure.
