HRD Minister Mr. Prakash Javadekar has asked developed countries, that are a part of the OCED (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development) group to fulfill their commitment and enhance funding in education. He stressed that the move was critical for ensuring lifelong opportunities and quality learning for all.

Javadekar was addressing the 39th General Conference of UNESCO last week. He stated that the findings of Global Education Monitoring Report clearly reveal poor international commitment to finance the education sector at global level. He also added that developed countries can play a vital role in fulfilling their commitment. He quoted that ‘investing in education is nothing but investing in peace and sustainable future’.

Adding further, Javadekar mentioned that the funding was essential to implement ‘Sustainable Development Goal 4 Education 2030’ as well as other associated targets. According to him, India recognised that accountability with regard to finance of education was highly critical to realise or achieve SDG 4 and associated targets. Therefore, he called for accountability on the part of both ‘individual countries’ and the ‘development partners’.

Giving more details about SDG 4 – Education 2030, Javadekar stated that it requires well-targeted, increased financing, efficient & effective utilisation of allocated funds. He explained that India was investing over 4.5% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) on education, despite competing demands on resources.
