JIPMER's Karaikal Campus to be Inaugurated by Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi

The first branch of centrally sponsored Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER ) is coming up in Karaikal Arasalar complex. The new campus is being structured at a temporarily renovated PWD building before it is shifted to its full-fledged campus.

Lt. Governor of Pondicherry, Kiran Bedi will declare open the complex on 14 December 2016 in presence of V Narayanasamy, Chief Minister of Pondicherry and other MPs of Pondicherry.

Dr. Subhash Chandra Parija, Director of JIPMER will preside over the function. The function will be addressed by Medical Superintendent of JIPMER, Dr. J Balanchander.

For the construction of the new campus, Health and Family Welfare Ministry has approved 80 acres of land provided by the Government of Pondicherry. The new complex would come up at an estimated cost of INR 847. The amount would be released in a phased manner.

The academic wing will be developed at an estimated cost of INR 497 in the first phase. A multi-specialty hospital would be constructed at a cost of INR 350 crore with state-of-the-art infrastructure.

Around 49 students have been granted admissions at the new complex. It is to be noted that a student studying at Karikal complex has been facing a lot of hardship due to lack of infrastructure. Several students had approached Madras High Court to allow them to study at JIPMER's Pondicherry campus. But the Court refused to accept the plea of the students on the ground that their selection was made on the basis of their choice to study at Karaikal campus only.
