J&K Students to Access 1.5 Crore Digital Books and Journals
- The tie-up between NDLI and Department of Libraries and Research of J&K will provide cost-free and best educational resources to J&K students.
- The initiative was launched by Education Minister of Jammu & Kashmir.
Department of Libraries and Research, Jammu & Kashmir has initiated a plan to tie up with the NDLI (National Digital library of India) for providing free access to 1.5 crore downloadable e-books and journals, exclusively for students and academicians.
On December 11, 2017, the Department of Libraries and Research organised a workshop on ‘Digitised Libraries. Education Minister of the State, Priya Sethi, inaugurated the workshop. It was during the workshop that the Education Minister launched the initiative. On this occasion, she stressed that it is time to adopt and benefit from new technological inventions and digital interventions. The significant tie-up between NDLI and Department of Libraries will provide fee and best educational resources to students in the state, she highlighted.

Union Human Resource Development Ministry has been maintaining NDLI, an online repository of e-books. Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur developed NDLI with the support of HRD Ministry. Through NDLI, students can access educational content in multiple languages, on different subject domains including agriculture, humanities, science, technology and others. The education material is available from primary to Ph.D. level, which is a major speciality of NDLI.

Some of the learning resources of NDLI are audio and video lectures, manuscripts, thesis, articles, journals and e-books.
Already, the Department of Libraries and Research of J&K launched massive digitalisation programme with a motive to integrate the J&K libraries with NDLI’s online repository. Through this initiative, all the libraries in J&K will be digitised in a phased manner. NDLI will also train the staff of Department of Libraries and Research of J&K regarding the use of online services.
