The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has decided to provide engineering and management courses. However, University Grants Commission's (UGC) approval is still pending.

If UGC considers the proposal, the university will begin the admission process for these courses from the academic session of 2018.

The premier institute formed in the year 1969 is known for its arts and humanities courses. JNU now wants to expand its programme reach to management and engineering subjects. An official proposal along with a presentation of the same has been submitted to UGC, the country’s university regulator.

The varsity will most probably start with a bachelor course in engineering programme while the introduction of management programme will take more time.

Without the permission of UGC, no government-run university is allowed to start new courses as this involves fresh or enhanced funding to build infrastructure, hire faculty and various recurring expenses.

A senior official of Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry revealed that they have received plans for the next year from all the central universities, including JNU for the next year and the decisions will be made after studying all the proposals. According to the sources, the University will soon be informed about the decision.

About the University:

JNU has won the annual Visitor’s Award for best university this year, which the government initiated three years back to motivate healthy competition among the central universities. It is accredited 3.91 out of 4, highest grade awarded by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in India.

The university has schools of arts and aesthetics, social sciences, environment science, international relations among others. It has more than 7,000 students enrolled in the various courses of in the undergraduate, postgraduate and Ph.D. programmes.
