JNU to Introduce Master’s and Doctorate Courses in Disaster Research
- The courses will offer a community-based approach against disasters rather than a hazard-based approach so that they know how to manage people during calamities.
- The course is also available in Auckland, Copenhagen, and Finland.
Jawaharlal Nehru University is planning to launch master’s and doctorate courses in disaster research to prepare and aware the new generation for a community-based approach against disasters. It is for the first time in the country that a transdisciplinary centre has been launched at JNU. It will offer courses like MA & PhD in disaster research. The course is also available in Auckland, Copenhagen, and Finland.
Amita Singh, Chairperson of the Special Centre for Disaster Research at JNU said that India still lacks community-based approach towards disaster management. Even after regular awareness programmes organised across the country to manage people and situations during calamities. We tend to focus more on hazard-based approach rather than community-based approach, that is what is the need of an hour.

She also mentioned that since there is a lack of community-based approach, we tend to incur a huge loss of human lives, State’s GDP, human lives, and agriculture during such calamities. Which further leads human trafficking, increase in organ trade, hence to stop all this we need plan a better strategy.

The new centre at JNU is working in collaboration with social and natural scientists towards developing community resilience against disaster. The main aim of the programme is to combine social science with natural science and use them both to sensitise people towards nature and to generate awareness among people regarding how to handle the situation during natural and man-made calamaities.
