Kannur Medical College to Re-Introduce MBBS Course
The management of Kannur medical college is making efforts to reintroduce MBBS courses in the institute and MCI representatives at Kannur Medical College will assess the facilities at the institute till January 15, 2019.
The management at Kannur Medical College, located in Anjarakandy has initiated efforts to reintroduce MBBS courses in the institute. The MCI representatives will assess and offer accreditation to the college only if the health ministry recommends affiliation. The officials from Kerala University of Health Sciences will take a look at the facilities at the institute till January 15, 2019.
The main issue in the 150-seater college is the lack of inpatients. To deal with the crisis, efforts are made to bring patients to the hospital and the treatment has been made free for two weeks at the hospital.
The SC had earlier banned MBBS admissions in the college after finding irregularities in the admissions conducted in 2016-17. Admissions were banned because the management failed to pay back twice the amount of fee which the students had paid for admission in 2016-17.
The management of Kannur Medical College has now claimed that they obeyed SC’s orders and repaid the students. However, more than 20 students didn’t give it in writing that they received the money. Few others signed in stamp paper before the notary that they got money back.

The admission supervisory committee did submit the report to SC stating that court order was not followed. Post this, the committee was entrusted to look at the payments. Management had claimed they took Rs.10 lakh and Rs.1.65 lakh as special fee and parents who had alleged earlier they paid Rs.50 lakh, approved the management claim.
There were allegations that those who paid more than Rs11.65 lakh had got the repayment of Rs.23.30 lakh in cheque and balance in another way.

A case was filed by a student named Riya George who said she lost an opportunity due to the management irregularities and SC will consider plea on demanding Rs.2 crore on January 25. The management hasn’t yet filed the counter affidavit in this case.
