Karnataka Govt. Urges Centre to Allow Universities Raise Funds via Other Modes

During the65thCABE meetingthat took place a couple of days ago inNew Delhi, the state government of Karnataka urged the centre to allow universities to raise funds through alternate sources. Similarly, the state government requested the centre to permit setting-up of not-for-profit companies in higher education. According to the state government, the final autonomy of universities could be achieved through these initiatives. The state government also pointed out the necessity for setting up‘Entrepreneurial University’and‘Skill University’in every state.

Higher Education Minister of Karnataka, Mr. Basavaraja Rayareddi attended the 65thCABE meeting on January 16, 2018, and submitted the recommendations of state government. Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (Karnataka), Mr. Tanveer Sait was also present at the meeting. Among the recommendations, Mr. Basavaraja Rayareddi highlighted the need for enhancing budgetary allocation forhigher education. Similarly, he stressed on raising funds through non-formal organisations.

Mr. Rayareddi also suggested the central government to frame innovative fundraising techniques through the integration of social entrepreneurship and community-oriented services. Similarly, the central government must ensure equitable incentives and benefits to both state andcentral universities. All the schemes implemented for central universities should be applicable for state universities, he stressed.

Finally, Mr. Rayareddi informed centre that the state government’s recommendations that were made in October 2016 CABE meet are yet to be implemented.

The state government highlighted the importance of girls’ education at least up to age 12.

Education ministers and representatives from all the states attended the CABE meeting.
