With the end of attendance tracking via the pen and paper system, colleges are coming with new ways to keep a check on a student's attendance.
Some of the methods adopted after that include using vocal roll calls to track the students but unfortunately, this method didn't work for long as it often created confusion and errors during attendance. Some of the colleges have now taken the help of technology to keep track of a student's attendance. One of the means is the Radio Frequency Identity Cards (RFID) which has been adopted by the National Kannada Education Society, Wadala for the same. According to Principal Saroja Rao, this new method can keep a check on large masses of students whereas the earlier adopted biometric system was time-consuming.

How does this system work?
As soon as a student walks through the school gate, his entry/ exit gets registered via the identity cards handed to each and every student which comprises of an electronic chip.
In case a student is not registered in the system for any particular day, the information of his absence is then sent to his parents.

After trying the biometric method of calculating attendance, SIES College, Matunga has finally given a go ahead to the RFID cards system.
According to Principal Harsha Mehta, the college has found certain loopholes in the method like students jumping courses, change of timetables and absence of teaching staff. Within two years, the college plans to install the biometric system in every class.

A combination of both is used at Andhra Education Society (AES), Wadala. At the time of entry, students have to register themselves through the RFID card at the college gate and later while entering the classrooms, students have to register themselves again via the biometric detector.
In case a student does not attend his class but is present in the college, an alert is sent out to his parents.
In St Xavier’s College, Dhobi Talao, biometric system is used to track attendance. The college experimented with the same for 1 year, before adopting it completely.
Students at the college welcomed the new attendance regulating system and said that this is a full proof method to track attendance and combat problems like proxy.
