B.Ed course has been losing its charm even since it has been made a two-year course. Most of the students are not turning up to B.Ed course options and most of the seats in various colleges are lying vacant. The same situation was witnessed in Andhra Pradesh where the number of the students who took AP-EDCET 2017 (B.Ed entrance) examination on April 19, 2017, was less than half of the B.Ed seats available across the state.

Prof. R. Ranganathan, Convener of Andhra Pradesh EDCET 2017 revealed that out of 8,785 registered candidates, only 7,152 candidates appeared for the examination. It is the first time that the number of applicants was very less compared to the previous years. Last year, around 9,500 candidates took the entrance test.

In 2016, Prakasam and Guntur districts witnessed less number of takers for the B.Ed entrance examination. There were around 400 students who took the entrance examination from Prakasam and the number of vacant seats was 3,500. The same situation has repeated this year and it is likely that most of the B.Ed seats will remain vacant under the government quota.

Many B.Ed colleges across the state will be able to function only if they manage to fill seats under management quota.

Last year, the government of Andhra Pradesh granted approval for 149 new B.Ed colleges in the state. It was surprising that despite the existing B.Ed colleges unable to fill vacant seats, more colleges were approved in the state for B.Ed courses.

For the first time, the government of Andhra Pradesh conducted AP-EDCET 2017 exam in an online mode. The online exam received a positive response from the students and no issues were reported.
