Low Demand for Engineering in Telangana, M.Tech Seats to be Slashed
- M.Tech seats in Telangana to be reduced from 5,400 to 4,000.
- Most of the private engineering colleges across the state are finding it hard to fill the seats every year.
It seems that the M.Tech course in private engineering colleges across Telangana has been losing its allure. Over the past three years, the number of M.Tech seats has been reduced due to the poor response from the students. The number of M.Tech seats available in the year 2016 was 15,000. Due to the fewer takers during the academic session 2015-16, the state government had reduced the M.Tech seats from 15,000 to 5,400 for the academic session 2017-18. Even though the number of seats was reduced, private colleges have miserably failed to fill the seats.
According to sources, the state government of Telangana is expected to slash the M.Tech seats from 5,400 to 4,000. The decision was taken by JNTU-Hyderabad, which is the affiliated college for most of the private engineering colleges in Telangana. In January 2018, approximately 350 private colleges were shut down by the Telangana government.

So far, management of 28 engineering colleges requested JNTU-H to undo 77 M.Tech courses for the upcoming academic session. Recently, the varsity introduced strict rules and regulations to improve the quality of engineering education in the state. Therefore, these colleges may not provide quality education with limited financial resources and infrastructure. JNTU-H has also made Ph.D. degree mandatory for M.Tech graduates to teach in engineering colleges.
The introduction of biometric attendance system to both faculty and students weeded out the presence of bogus faculty in engineering colleges.

Apart from the 28 engineering colleges, 11 colleges applied for shutting down and eight colleges applied for closure of B.Tech courses in 11 disciplines.
Besides engineering colleges, seven pharmacy colleges decided to close four specialisations offered in M.Pharma course. There were hardly any takers to these courses.
JNTU-H will release the final list of affiliated colleges on May 05, 2018. Over 266 private engineering colleges applied for affiliation.
