Last week, the High Court of Madras had questioned the HRD Ministry regarding the prevalence of any scheme to deal with unemployment among the engineering graduates. The court was hearing a plea filed by Mr. Natarajan regarding campus recruitments or placements in engineering colleges. Justice N Kribakaran heard the plea filed by the petitioner and directed the state government of Tamil Nadu to implement a state-level placement programme in reputed IT firms, which would be conducted in an effective and fair manner.

The HC of Madras further directed the Ministry of Human Resource and Development to submit the details about the scheme (if any) that would mitigate unemployment among engineering graduates. Pointing out, it said a large number of engineering colleges in India is one of the major reasons for unemployment. The court indicated that the number of engineering colleges is increasing while the employment opportunities are not.

The court also directed the All India Council for Technical Education to file a report on the number of engineering colleges in the country, the total number of engineering students in these colleges and their employability by November 7, 2017.

AICTE has been working consistently to revamp the engineering education system in the country. The council has come up with measures for improving the standards of engineering colleges. A revised engineering curriculum will come into effect from the next academic session, which will focus more on practical learning.
