Maharashtra Opts for PPP Route to Establish New Medical Colleges
The state of Maharashtra has opted for the PPP model to increase the number of doctors. According to the scheme, new medical colleges will be established in Nandurbar, Alibag, Satara and Amravati by the year 2022.
With the aim of increasing the number of medical seats, the State Government of Maharashtra has decided to establish new medical colleges under the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model. The idea has been inspired by the Gujarat model. Under the PPP scheme, colleges and hospitals will be built by private partners on government land. The tuition fee is most likely to be higher than that of government colleges.
As per the plan, the state is to start medical colleges in Alibag, Amravati and Satara in 2021-22 and in Nandurbar in 2020-21. The state has proposed an expenditure of 1,300 crore rupees for technical and higher education and 2,525 crore rupees for school education. Under the scheme, 12 centres of excellence will also be set up by converting already existing government colleges in various cities. The colleges included in the conversion plan are -

Talking about the project, Finance Minister Ajit Pawar said that the new medical colleges will include state-of-the-art facilities, well-equipped libraries, smart classrooms, sports facilities, science labs, internet connectivity. He also said that teachers will be trained for the newly set up medical colleges.
Amit Deshmukh, Minister of Medical Education discussed the PPP model saying that in order to increase the number of doctors, it is important that there is a higher number of medical colleges in every district.
