The 519 students who were discharged based on the notices issued by MCI face difficult times as they have to vacate their college seats. These students will have to reappear for NEET 2017 in order to take admission in MBBS or BDS programmes. The students feel demotivated and say that they don’t have any strength left to give the exams again.

The seats of these students have been vacated as they were admitted directly without any counselling procedure. These admissions were therefore considered a violation of the September 28, 2016, Supreme Court order that directed all state governments to allocate seats based on centralised counselling with NEET as a performance metric.

The students say that discharging them was an unfair move as they had secured good scores in NEET 2016. The students also added that they have been discharged even though candidates with lower scores were allowed to continue MBBS programmes just because they were admitted through counselling.

A student of the Venkateshwara Institute of Medical Sciences, UP, Pratibha said that she scored 252 marks in NEET 2016 but her admission was canceled by MCI as she took direct admission. She also added that students with marks as low as 200 are still enrolled in the institute as they took admission through counselling.

The discharged students shared their problems and said that they are losing hope as they had worked hard while they were pursuing their programmes. Some students also claim that they are almost medicos as they have done a lot of coursework already.

The MCI is now asking these students to reappear for NEET and apply for counselling. Students are finding it difficult to cope with this situation. Preparing for NEET is not simple as it requires time and two years of hard work to score well, added a student.
