The government took the decision after the Supreme Court ordered on the issue in 2016. The NDA Government at the centre allowed persecuted religious migrants from Bangladesh and Pakistan to study medical courses in India through self-financing schemes on the basis of their performance in examinations of class 12th. But they were required to get at least 60% marks in science subject and 50% marks in English. NDA Government took the decision to be more considerate towards the religious minorities from Bangladesh and Pakistan who are mostly Hindus.

But last year, CBSE announced that from 2017-18 onwards the medical admissions in all the medical and dental colleges of the country will be based on NEET even for the foreign nationals. There is a list of 26 medical colleges in the country from where MEA facilitates the admission of these students on the basis of self-finance. AIIMS and Safdarjung Medical College and Hospital are also part of this list of institutes.
