Chief Minister of Puducherry, V Narayanasamy on Wednesday, 15 February, 2017, said that he had requested the Union Government to exempt students of Puducherry from NEET based selection for admissions into medical colleges during the 2017-2018 academic year.

He said he had written a letter to the Centre in this regard. He also recalled that he has tabled a resolution on the floor of the assembly on January 24, 2017, on the matter. The resolution was adopted unanimously. The report has been sent to the Health Ministry to exempt the state from the NEET purview.

The CM further said that the state will not be able to accept NEET based selection. It is because the schools in this Union Territory are not fully equipped to adopt the syllabus of CBSE. NEET is the criterion for selection into medical courses. The CM would reiterate the plea during his next visit to Delhi and will discuss with the Union Health Minister.

Right now, admissions to medical colleges including privately managed institutions in this UT state are done through Centralised Admission Committee and are based on the marks obtained by the candidates in the 12th examinations. There are two state government-run medical colleges and seven private medical institutions in Puducherry.
