Medical Seats Increased by 30% in Last Four Years: PM Modi
While laying the foundation stone of AIIMS Madurai on January 27, 2019, PM Modi said that there has been an increase in the number of medical seats by 30 per cent in the last four and a half years. Also, 1.5 lakh health and wellness centres are being set up in India, he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi mentioned that the number of undergraduate medical seats have increased by 30 per cent in the last four and a half years. He made this statement at the inauguration of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Madurai on Sunday, January 27, 2019. About 1.5 lakh health and wellness centres are also being set up to offer primary care and preventive health services, he further said. AIIMS Madurai was given the union cabinet approval in December 2018.
He also stated that the government is focusing on the healthcare sector and it is a well-thought-out approach to ensure universal health coverage for the entire nation. Ayushman Bharat’s emphasis is on addressing health issues.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, the government will be supporting medical colleges’ upgradation. Mission Indradhanush is also progressing well in the area of preventive healthcare. For making safe pregnancy a mass movement, Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana are the two schemes in place.

As per the PM, the government is also working towards eliminating TB by 2025. AIIMS Madurai will have 750 beds and, the emphasis will be on research and postgraduation. It will have 60 seats for B.Sc Nursing and 100 seats for MBBS. Modi also revealed the super-speciality blocks at Madurai, Tirunelveli and Thanjavur's state-run medical colleges through video-conference. These blocs are expected to have high-tech diagnostic equipment and facilities such as Cath lab.
