In a shocking turn of events, it was revealed on social media that a BSc Nursing textbook titled “Textbook of Sociology” by T.K Indrani, meant to be studied by second year BSc Nursing students, has a section that explains the merits of dowry. As is known, dowry is a social evil in Indian society and its eradication has been a matter of concern for long. The Indian legal system also has strict laws to counter the dowry system prevalent in society. On the cover of the book it states that it has been written according to the syllabus prescribed by the Indian Nursing Council.

In a certain section of the heavily condemned part on the merits of dowry, the textbook also states that ugly girls can be married off easily using the dowry system. Another section states that “dowry is helpful in establishing a new household” with furniture and other electrical appliances as well as vehicles. Even now, there are reports of brides being killed, burned or assaulted in the name of dowry. Therefore, the publishing of this textbook with a whole section dedicated to the advantages of dowry is a seriously condemnable move.

The INC in its latest statement has said - “It has been brought to the notice of the Indian Nursing Council that some authors of Sociology for Nurses are quoting INC syllabus to publish substandard content in textbooks. INC strongly condemns any derogatory content which is against the prevailing law of the land”.

Shiv Sena Rajya MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has recently written to the Union Education  Minister Dharmendra Pradhan seeking immediate scrutiny into this issue so that the book can be taken off the market as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the National Commission for Women (NCW) has also reached out to the Union Education Minister and asked him to take stringent action against the BSc Nursing textbook written by T.K Indrani.

Chairperson Rekha Sharma has written to the Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan that - “It sends a very wrong message to students about the prevailing menace of 'dowry'”. She has also suggested that remedial measures be taken immediately.
