MHRD Accredits Four-Star Rating to Goa University Innovation Cell
The Union Human Resource Development Ministry has recently released the 2018-19 ratings for the higher education institutes of Western India. Fatorda’s Don Bosco College of Engineering scored four stars.
The Institution Innovation Cell (IIC) of Goa University has been awarded 4-star rating in 2018-19 ratings published by the MHRD (Ministry of Human Resource Development). The MHRD released this rating for 22 higher education institutes of western India.
The Ministry had asked Western Indian institutes to create their own Institute Innovation Cell (IIC). The goal of establishing these cells was to create a vibrant innovation ecosystem within the institutes.

On a five-star scale, many institutes managed to secure four-stars, whereas, some remained could not secure high rating. Fatorda Don Bosco College of Engineering (DBCE) earned the highest rating of four stars. Other than DBCE, two more institutes in Goa managed to secure three stars. Despite the performances of DBCE and Goa University, no other institute in the state has been given a full five-star rating.
In fact, IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) Goa, which was established only three years ago and is currently operating on a temporary campus, scored fairly well with a three-star rating by the MHRD. The institute shared the position with Margao Shree Damodar College of Commerce and Economics (SDCCE), which also received three stars. Other than that, Smt Parvatibai Chowgule College of Arts & Science (PCCAS) and Assagao-Based Agnel Institute of Technology and Design (AITD) got two stars. Government institutes in Goa like Padre Conceicao College of Engineering (PCCE), Verna, SS Dempo College of Commerce and Economics (SSDCCE) and PES College of Pharmacy Farmagudi managed to score only one star.

The MIC (MHRD Innovation Cell) was formed to foster an innovation culture in a systematic manner in all higher education institutes of India. The idea was to transform students into prototypes by providing support to their work on new ideas. To take this idea forward, IICs were established in selected higher education institutes across the country. These innovation centers are expected to provide a support mechanism for start-ups and form a system to encourage innovative ideas.
