Mobile App to Ensure Women Safety Launched at DU
During an emergency, the app notifies the emergency contacts of the user with the longitude and latitude of the location.
A mobile app called “I Feel Safe” was launched at Delhi University. The main objective of this app is to ensure the safety of women. Union Minister, Mr. Harsh Vardhan said that it is time to change societal mindsets so that every girl receives respect and success in her career. Women have faced social abuse for centuries and it is necessary that the government takes steps to ensure safety of women.

The app has been developed by Nirbhaya Trust in collaboration with Mobile Standards Alliance of India. The app is available for download for all smartphone users. The app consists of a virtual panic button which can be pressed five times by the user of the mobile device to activate the alarm. The alarm works even when the mobile is locked.

The app does not need any wifi networks or data plans to be accessed. During an emergency, the app notifies the emergency contacts of the user with the longitude and latitude of their location. The location of the victim is tracked every 30 seconds and made available to the emergency contacts. The app also places an automatic call to emergency number 100. A team arrives at the spot and provides support in overcoming the emergency situation.
Asha Devi, Mother of Nirbhaya, said that it is her wish to see that each and every girl should be able to live a wholesome life, and they need to step out of the home without any fear of violence or molestation. She appreciated the support given by the government and youth to Nirbhaya Jyoti Trust.
