According to the data gathered by Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Mumbai, it is observed that there is a rapid decline in the enrollments to engineering, MBA and MCA courses in the academic year 2016-2017. Most students have been apprehensive about these traditional courses because they are linked to inadequate placement opportunities. A decline of 10-20% in the number of students opting for engineering courses has been observed. There is a 20 percent drop in the total number of students opting for MCA and 10 percent in MBA.

This year, a total number of 64,418 engineering seats are vacant out of 1.44 lakh available seats. The enrollments in engineering courses have declined drastically this year. Similarly, only 26,000 students opted for MBA as against the number of 29,000 last year.

According to the report of DTE, most of the students are opting for Architecture and Pharmacy courses. The number of enrollments for Architecture has increased to 50 percent this year.

Nancy D’souza, an HR Professional, said that nowadays students are selective in opting courses. They feel that MBA does not lead to better placements. The competition for jobs in engineering and MBA is cut-throat. There are fewer placement offers in B.Arch, but chances of getting placed are high.

The demand for engineering courses and employment opportunities is expected to increase in future as the government of India is taking steps and various initiatives like ‘Make in India’ and ‘Smart City Projects’.
