Mumbai University to Waive Fee for Students Impacted by Unseasonal Rainfall

Mumbai University MU) has taken a decision to give tuition and exam fee waiver to the students affected by the recent unseasonal rainfall. Re-examination will also be held for the students who were arrested in October as they protested against the felling of trees in Aarey Colonly, and at the same time, the university will also write to the governor on the students’ behalf to withdraw the cases against them.

These decisions were taken at the senate meeting of MU. MU VC Dr Suhas Pednekar appealed to the students to not give up on their studies due to financial constraints and said that MU will do the needful by exempting fees for the affected students. All the details regarding the same will be uploaded on the university’s official website in a few days. The NSS unit of the university has already given relief material amounting to Rs. 25 lakh in the areas impacted by the flood as per the officials.

Also, the senate members raised the demand that MU should pay the lawyers’ fees of 938 non-teaching temporary employees who moved the SC regarding increase in their wages. The employees said they had been working for the Mumbai University for very long and want regularisation.

Other issues raised at the meeting pertained to the cases wherein students who have got bogus degrees have not got their degrees even after completion of their courses. There is also shortage of grievance cells in over 400 colleges and there is the need for having a police chowki in the Kalina campus.
