The University of Mumbai is yet to announce the results of 13 subjects. The On Screen Assessment Process is expected to conclude latest by September 19, 2017. While informing the Bombay High Court earlier, the University assured that the mark sheets of all the final year students will be uploaded on the official website by the deadline of September 19, 2017, as informed by them.

What is causing the delay in the declaration of results of Mumbai University can be related to the idea of implementing the ‘On Screen Assessment’ method this year. The policy has received severe criticism from not only students but also the teachers, political parties and the state government.

The Chancellor of the University and the Governor of the State, Mr. Ch. Vidyasagar Rao in anticipation of the delay in the announcement of results had earlier written to the VC of Mumbai University, Mr. Sanjay Deshmukh. In the letter, he had suggested the varsity to roll back the mechanism of On Screen Assessment, a week before its implementation citing valid reasons such as the process being highly time-consuming. With a large number of candidates who appeared for the exams and about 18 lakh answer sheets to be checked, the varsity was earlier warned of the delay that may be caused. If the varsity had followed these suggestions, the chaos that has been created with respect to Mumbai University results could have been avoided.

On the other hand, Mr. Vidyasagar Rao has sought a factual report from the University of Mumbai on the delay in assessment, the appointment of the agency, reasons for switching to On Screen Assessment and details of students who skipped the exam from the state.

With India moving towards a digital country, the varsity’s decision to adopt On Screen Assessment was nonetheless a good one. However, failure in appointing the agency on time was the biggest mistake that has delayed the evaluation process.

Usually, the varsity is expected and obliged to declare the results of all the exams within 45 days of its conduction.
