To stop the false flow of information, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has warned colleges to stop providing misleading data to students and the general public. The council also advised the institutes to provide authentic information about their accreditation status.

A cautionary notice was issued by the council stating that institutes who fail to follow this norm will face dire consequences. The information regarding accreditation of institutes will be forwarded to Mahendra Nath Pandey, Minister of State for HRD, as the response to a question raised in Rajya Sabha on Thursday, March 23, 2017.

According to the response sent by the council, if the institutes are found providing false or misleading information regarding their accreditation, strict action will be taken against them. Institutes cannot provide false information about their NAAC grading or show accreditation after the validity period is over, added the response.

NAAC has also taken steps to spread awareness regarding the information of institutes by publishing press releases and articles mentioning the validity and authenticity of the grades displayed by the institutes on their respective official websites.

The NAAC is an accreditation agency that is responsible for assessing and accrediting higher education institutions and universities in the form of grades. UGC had made the accreditation by NAAC mandatory in 2015. The funding provided to government institutes has also been linked to these grades.
