Students seeking admission in medical programmes offered by state-level colleges are in a fix as the state government said that only those students who have studied class 10 and class 12 in the state will be eligible for admission in the state’s medical colleges on the basis of NEET 2017.

After hearing a petition challenging the government’s order on Wednesday, July 5, 2017, Gujarat High Court issued a two-week notice asking the state government to give its reply regarding the matter.

Medical aspirants seeking admission in the medical colleges of Gujarat said that the Gujarat Professional Medical Educational Courses rule 4(3) that was amended to make changes in the Regulation of Admission in UG Courses Rules is a violation of article 14 of the constitution.

The petitioners added that the rule mentioned above if implemented for admissions, will create a class within the regular class of students who otherwise form a homogenous group.

Due to the above ruling passed by the state government, various students who have secured a good rank in NEET will not be able to apply for the medical colleges in the state as they have not pursued both class 10 and class 12 from the state.

One of the many examples of such aspirants was a student who did his class 10 from Bangalore and class 12 from Gujarat. However, the rule renders him ineligible to apply for the state medical college despite his high score in the NEET 2017 exam.
