A section of lawyers in Coimbatore boycotted the district courts and demanded the central government to scrap National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) from next year. They further demanded the Centre to include ‘Education’ in State List instead of the Concurrent List.

The lawyers began their protest on September 7, 2017, and decided to boycott district courts on September 8, 2017. Around 150 advocates including 30 women have been taking part in the protest to express their sorrow over Anitha, a medical aspirant who committed suicide due to the injustices caused in the admission process based on NEET. Students from different parts of the state also joined the protest by raising slogans against NEET.

Government Arts College in Coimbatore has been closed indefinitely as the students continued their protest for the third consecutive day. Due to the chaotic situation, police have also asked the students to vacate the hostels for the time being. Ever since Anitha committed suicide, students, political parties and other organisations are carrying out massive protests seeking exemption from NEET. According to the protesters, the central government must scrap NEET in Tamil Nadu as a mark of respect to Anitha.

Despite a number of efforts, Tamil Nadu has not been given NEET exemption for the academic session 2017-18. Many students failed to get admission to MBBS course even though they scored good marks in Class 12 under the state board. Medical aspirants in Tamil Nadu are against the CBSE-centric NEET and threatened to continue the protest until the central government hears their plea.
