President Pranab Mukherjee has passed the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2016 and the Dentists (Amendment) Bill, 2016 that were passed in the parliament last week. Admissions to medical and dental colleges in India will now be based on a single entrance test, namely the National Eligibility cum Entrance Exam (NEET).

The two acts were passed to implement NEET completely from the next session and didn’t face much resistance from any party except Tamil Nadu-based AIADMK. The bills were passed with the objective to eliminate corruption and exploitation of students during counseling. The exam will bring transparency in the admission process and will help students to find a smoother road to colleges.

The two Acts will make it mandatory for all medical and dental educational institutions in India to take admissions to college via NEET to their various postgraduate and undergraduate courses.

The law states that a uniform entrance test will be conducted basis which admissions to undergraduate level and postgraduate level courses in medical and dental colleges will be done. It also mentions that the test will be conducted in Hindi, English and other regional languages as well.

The NEET will be fully implemented by the session 2017-18. The bills were passed to amend the original legislations i.e. the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956 and the Dentists Act, 1948. The exam will keep account of the multiplicity of the exams as well.
