NEET-UG 2017: Over 57,000 Candidates Skip Examination

The national level medical entrance examination, NEET-UG 2017 took place on May 7, 2017, in various test centres across India. This year, around 57,000 candidates did not attend the examination. Compared to the previous year, the number of candidates who skipped NEET-UG 2017 was high. This year, around 11.38 lakh candidates registered for the medical entrance test. According to CBSE, the total attendance was 95%, and the examination took place in a smooth manner.

In the year 2016, only 2.5 percent of the registered candidates skipped the examination. However, it doubled this year. Last year, 18,777 candidates skipped the NEET-UG examination.

This year, CBSE registered the highest number of candidates for NEET-UG 2017 examination. The reason was Supreme Court’s decision to scrap the state level medical entrance examinations. Among the states, Jammu & Kashmir registered a high number of candidates for the test. The total attendance from Jammu & Kashmir was 97.10 percent.

As per the data of CBSE, NEET-UG 2017 took place at 1,921 examination centres in 103 cities across India. Out of 11.38 lakh applicants, 6.42 lakh were female candidates.

Even though CBSE mentioned that NEET-UG 2017 took place in a smooth manner, various incidents took place at few test centres. For instance, students received Hindi-English medium question paper instead of Telugu medium in Warangal, Telangana. The negligence of the authorities made the students to take the examination in English medium. Students expressed their dissatisfaction over the fact that they could not do well in the examination.

In the same way, the strict instructions issued by CBSE for the smooth conduct of examination annoyed the students and parents. CBSE imposed restrictions on dress code, and it caused major inconvenience.
