During the MBBS and BDS admission process in Tamil Nadu, the authority for conducting admissions had allotted government quota seats to the candidates who do not belong to Tamil Nadu. Enraged with the policy of the state government, a medical aspirant from Tamil Nadu has approached the High Court of Madras to quash the merit list for BDS and MBBS course which was prepared by the Directorate of Medical Education, Tamil Nadu as per the NEET-UG 2017 score and merit list. The court will take up the matter for hearing this week.

The plea to quash the MBBS and BDS merit lists was filed by Vignayya, a medical aspirant who secured 206 marks in NEET-UG 2017. She explained in the plea that she was called for counselling on August 29, 2017, where she observed that a large number of students who were not from Tamil Nadu were granted admission to MBBS and BDS courses under government quota. According to the order of the Supreme Court, the candidates who secured admission to MBBS or BDS course under All-India Quota (AIQ) are not eligible to take part in the state-level counselling process.

The petitioner further mentioned that the rank list prepared by the admissions authority is contrary to the Article 14 of the Indian Constitution. The petitioner indicated that the authorities failed to compare the state rank lists and eliminate the students who have already secured MBBS or BDS seat. She further concluded that the state government must prepare for a separate merit list for MBBS and BDS courses based on NEET-UG 2017.
