The First Draft of National Education Policy 2019 had caused anger among the masses as it favoured teaching Hindi even in the states where the language is not spoken. After the immense uproar caused by the draft of NEP, the Union Minister of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank, told the Rajya Sabha that he is seeking suggestions from all universities.

Pokhriyal has also sought suggestions from the universities in Karnataka. They have received a letter from the UGC (University Grants Commission) in which the MHRD has requested them to give suggestions on the matter. The UGC has asked many universities if Hindi can be incorporated as a compulsory subject at the undergraduate level (UG level) in spite of the protests received from the southern cities of the country.

The imposition of Hindi language in the non-Hindi speaking states caused an uproar among the general public of the country and people took it to social media like Twitter to share their thoughts and express their disappointment regarding the issue. To oppose the idea, people had come up with the #nohindiimposition.

The anger and opposition of the public towards the Imposition of Hindi Language led to the Government modifying the policy. The government has now modified the draft stating that with the principle of flexibility, students who plan to change one or more of three languages, they are studying in class may do so in Class 6th or Class 7th so that they are still able to demonstrate proficiency in three languages.

A senior official of Bangalore University has affirmed receiving the letter from the UGC and said that it has been forwarded to the concerned officials so that they can give appropriate suggestions regarding the matter.

Whereas the First Draft of National Education Policy stated that, in keeping with the principle of flexibility, students who plan to change any of three languages may do so in Class 6th, as long as the student study three languages in the Hindi speaking stated would continue to include English, Hindi and any of the modern languages from other parts of the country, while the study of languages by students in the non-Hindi speaking stated would include Hindi, English and the regional language of the respective state.

The draft drew sharp reactions and caused anger among the Non-Hindi speaking states and the whole country started with the #nohindiimposition movement. Many renowned academicians, celebrities took it to twitter that it is unfair at the part of the government to include such clauses in the National Education Policy.

To do the damage control Centre notified that the State Governments recommendation and feedback from the general public will be taken into account. No language will be imposed.
