NIT Uttarakhand Students Go on Strike to Get Permanent Campus
- Students of NIT Uttarakhand launched a strike to get a permanent campus and overcome terrible conditions on campus.
- Students have forwarded a memorandum to the MHRD and have informed the director about their demands.
After seven years of silent struggle, the students of NIT Uttarakhand launched a strike to get a permanent campus for the college. The institute has been operating from a temporary campus since 2010.
Located approximately 150 kilometres from Dehradun, the institute has not yet been granted a permanent campus. Due to lack of space and hostel facility, the institute has been asking up to 6 students to adjust in rooms that are too small to accommodate even 2 students.
Lack of basic facilities like washrooms has made the life of students miserable. Where other NITs have spread themselves over 300 acres of land, 50 students at NIT Uttarakhand share 3 washrooms.
Authorities of the college state that increase in intake for the batch 2016-17 has caused overcrowding. The institute was started in 2010 with 90 student that were easily accommodated at the temporary campus.
The institute often misses good placement opportunities as recruiters do not want to visit a campus that is located in such a remote location.
Currently, the institute has close to 1200 students and without sufficient lodging facilities. Let down by the administration and overwhelmed by their plight, the students have launched a strike to get the required facilities.

The students stated that the Registrar of the institute has not taken any action regarding the overflowing bathrooms and overcrowded rooms. They further added that he promised to provide houses and hotels in order to accommodate the students.
That is not a permanent solution as these lodging facilities will not provide the right environment for education, the students added.
The Director of the institute also met with the students and said that all the facilities will be provided to the students on the campus itself. He also urged the students to make realistic demands.

The students have also forwarded a memorandum to the HRD Ministry asking them to intervene in the matter and provide them with a permanent campus in plains.
