NMC Modifies Requirements for Setting Up of Medical Colleges, MBBS Admissions

The National Medical Commission (NMC) recently made a major move to remove the provision of the minimum requirement to set up a medical college in India. Earlier, a minimum of five acres of land was required to set up a medical college and the affiliated teaching hospitals, but the NMC has now removed this provision.

In order to increase the annual MBBS intake for the academic year 2021-22, the NMC (National Medical Commission) has made changes in the requirements applicable to establish new medical colleges. Some of the major proposed changes are mentioned below:

• For a 100-seat college, the requirement for the number of beds is now reduced to 430 from 530.

• For a 200-seat college, it has been reduced to 830, which was earlier 930.

• Teaching time will now be spent in clinical specialities.

• As per the new regulations, the teaching faculty’s human resource has been rationalised. There is a provision for ‘visiting faculty’ to enhance training quality.

• Depending upon the patient load and needs, proportionate additional infrastructure and human resource in any speciality should be provided by the medical college and affiliating teaching hospital.

• If a college campus is situated in more than one plot of land then the plots should not be over 10 KM apart and the travelling time should not be over 30 minutes.

These new standards allow flexibility and optimisation in utilising the resources at disposal and help harness the tools of modern educational technology for quality education. This is a significant step in providing affordable medical education. Now, whether these new norms help reach the goal or not, that only time will tell.
