No Plan to Implement Digital Evaluation in Colleges: HRD Ministry
- MHRD has no plan to introduce digital evaluation of answer sheets in universities and colleges.
- A confirmation in this regard was made by MHRD in Lok Sabha on March 12, 2018.
On Monday, March 13, 2018, the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) informed Lok Sabha that the government is not planning to implement digital evaluation of answer scripts in universities and colleges. The proposal to implement digital evaluation is not pending before the government, clarified by the ministry.
The ministry further clarified that the universities across the country are established under a Provincial Act/ a State Act/ a Central Act. These universities have administrative autonomy, and they are free to decide whether to introduce digital evaluation of answer scripts or not. It is not mandatory for the government to take a decision in this regard, stated by MHRD.

Last year, the University of Mumbai faced several issues and problems by introducing digital evaluation. Due to these issues, the final-year results of Mumbai University were almost delayed by six months putting the career of students at risk. Even though 15,000 teachers were involved in the digital assessment of answer sheets, lack of proper training, awareness and severe technical glitches caused the delay. However, the varsity had not cancelled digital evaluation process, and it will be implemented for April 2018 exams too.

If implemented properly, digital evaluation of answer sheets has many benefits. It ensures transparency in the evaluation process and saves a lot of time. Compared to the manual evaluation of answer sheets, digital evaluation is easy. The digital system will also regulate several malpractices or cheating in the exams.
