No Permanent Faculty for 20,000 DU NCWEB Students

It seems like Non-Collegiate Women Education Board or NCWEB of the University of Delhi is following the path of DU School of Open Learning (SOL). In 2018, close to 20,000 girls enrolled in various courses offered by DU NCWEB. However, the students will not have the advantage of being taught by permanent faculty in 2018. The varsity appointed guest teachers to teach NCWEB students in 2018. On the other hand, the varsity had also taken an undertaking from teachers that they should not have a permanent employment if they are associated with DU NCWEB. As per DU, the move will give employment to guest teachers. However, there are doubts regarding the quality of education due to the absence of permanent faculty.

Some of the DU teachers were of the opinion that students could not cope with their studies if permanent teachers did not teach them at least once a week. They also opposed the varsity’s decision of appointing guest faculty, which was labelled discriminatory towards permanent teachers. If the varsity appoints guest teachers, it would be a disadvantage to students, who joined NCWEB assuming that experienced professors of DU might teach them. Guest teachers may not have similar expertise, they expressed.

Responding to the issue, a senior DU official indicated that the idea to engage guest faculty is to bring accountability to the system. Many permanent teachers are paid Rs. 2,000 per lecture. Therefore, they do not focus on regular classes and the quality of teaching is being affected. The varsity decided to give a chance to guest teachers so that their skills can be developed for the future, he explained.
