One-third Engineering Institutes Submitted Fraudulent Data for AICTE Approval

On conducting a surprise inspection, authorities have uncovered that one-third of engineering and technical institutes had submitted false data regarding the number of faculty members, laboratories, students and infrastructure to get AICTE approval.

The officials informed that a surprise inspection was conducted for 311 institutes and major discrepancies were discovered in the data submitted by 89 institutes. These institutes were approved by the AICTE in 2016.

According to the sources, a huge penalty will be imposed on these institutions. Some of these institutes that fabricated the data will also be closed.

Close to 10,000 technical as well as polytechnic institutes were granted approval by the AICTE in 2016. The council informed that more surprise visits will be conducted by experts to verify the education standards of these institutes.

In a meeting held last week, the council members stated that figures and data were inflated by these colleges to get approval.

AICTE had also posted information about the 279 fake colleges on its official website. Most of these fake institutions were found in Delhi, summing up to 66. These institutes were offering technical and engineering courses without the approval of the regulator and were offering merit-less certificates and degrees to students.

Talking about the issue, a senior official said that quality of technical education in the country is one of the biggest concern as employability rate is falling. According to recent reports, only 40% of the seven lakh engineers that graduate every year are employable.

The official also added that stricter rules will be implemented for the regulation of education and granting approvals to institutes.
