Prof Shalini Marwaha, the chairperson of the law department in a letter dated 24th March 2017 stated that this step was taken not just to quicken the result declaration process but also to have objectivity in the evaluation process.

There will be no restriction with respect to age bar of the applicants since there is a stay on rules of Bar Council of India (BCI) from the apex court. The French department of Panjab University has reduced its seats for one-year certificate course by over 30% for the session 2017-18. The meeting of the administrative and academic committee was held on 21st March and was headed by Prof Cecilia Antony, who is the acting chairperson. He decided on the seat cut explaining that the decrement of the seats is due to the shortage of the faculty and infrastructure. He revealed that since there are no rooms to hold big classes, the students of this certificate course used to sit in the corridors of the university. And then one fine day, someone complaint to the Prime Minister sending the picture of those students, although not blaming them for the same.

Another source revealed that presently the department has only two teachers and two other are re-employed. Earlier, they used to have five teachers for the course.

The name of the department ‘French and Francophone Studies: Language, Literature and Culture’ has been changed to ‘French and Francophone Studies’, the same name before 2014-15. It was reverted to the same name since the name 'French and Francophone Studies' covers all aspects of literature, language and culture.
