Pratap Bhanu Mehta To Be the Second Vice Chancellor of Ashoka University

Dr Pratap Bhanu Mehta is appointed as a new vice chancellor of Ashoka University in Sonepat, Haryana. He is the second individual to hold this post at the university and will assume his responsibilities from 1st July onwards.

Dr Mehta is currently the president and chief executive of the Centre for Policy Research (CPR) in the capital. Before joining the CPR as the head, Mehta has been a lecturer at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Harvard University and the New York University School of Law. He has done extensive work on intellectual history, political theory, constitutional law, international politics and on politics and society in India.

Also, as a public intellectual Mr Mehta has written in The Hindu, The Financial Times, The Indian Express, The Telegraph, and The International Herald Tribune.

The university revealed that after an extensive global search, the selection committee concluded that Mehta is the best personality to carry forward and enhance the vision which represents the Ashoka University.

In August 2016, the scholar was in the news when he had resigned from his position as the Executive Council member of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. The decision was taken after former bureaucrat Shakti Sinha’s name was shortlisted for the post of director. He had claimed that the reputation and integrity of the library were been compromised.

Professor Rudrangshu Mukherjee, ex-vice chancellor of Ashoka University who served since 2014, will be appointed as the institute’s next chancellor replacing Mr Andre Beteille once he completes his three-year tenure period.
