President Addresses IISc Convocation, Praises it for Research in Science and Technology

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee praised Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore for its efforts towards advancing research in science and technology. He pointed that the Indian university rankings confirmed that IISc is the best institute in India. IISc always finds a spot among top 200 institutes in the global rankings. Pranab Mukherjee made this statement at the convocation ceremony of IISc on July 5, 2017.
Praising the institute, the President of India indicated that alumni and faculty of IISc have been playing an important role in leading national science and technology institutions in the country. The alumni of IISc also hold various advisory or administrative roles in the government.

Speaking about the academic structure of IISc, President pointed that even though IISc has been maintaining the reputation of being a premier institute in the country, the academic stature of IISc is the best in the country as per NIRF Rankings 2017. Since its inception, IISc has laid more emphasis on basic knowledge in science and technology as well as research findings for social and industrial benefits.
President expressed his pride and happiness while addressing the gathering present at the institute.
During his address, honourable President recalled his experience when he entered the teaching profession for the first time. Mr. J.C. Ghosh was the director of the institute in the 1940s, who was also a source of inspiration for Pranab Mukherjee.

Honourable President pointed that India has numerous universities and educational institutions. The massive expansion of higher education sector had led to resource constraints and the dearth of quality teachers. Indian institutes must adopt best practices in academic management to become world-class.
During the convocation ceremony, the President honoured 677 students including graduates, postgraduates, post-doctoral research scholars passing out from the institute with awards and medals.
Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore was set up in 1909 through a private partnership between the government and Maharaja of Mysore, Jamsetji Nusseerwanji Tata.
