Speaking at the 8th Convocation of the Lovely Professional University (LPU), President of India, Pranab Mukherjee said that it should be the priority of educationalists to improve the quality of basic as well as applied research. The convocation was conducted on May 2, 2017. The President had also graced the 3rd convocation ceremony of LPU in 2013.

The President also added that good placements are not enough for an institute to achieve good international rankings. He also emphasised the need for nurturing intellectual capital in order to achieve a good status amongst the leading education institutions across the world.

Praising LPU for attracting students from over 50 countries, the President added that it is time to make India a higher education leader. He cited the example of ancient universities like Taxila and Nalanda and added that India should become the centre of learning by inviting students and faculty from all across the globe.

The President also emphasised the need to stop brain drain and said that in a country of 1.3 billion people, 38,000-degree colleges and 757 Universities are not enough. He further added that higher education should be more readily accessible to students.
