In his encouraging remark, President Pranab Mukherjee said that he is confident that any Indian institution that is involved in scientific research and development will soon be recognized as one of the top institutions in the world.

He recalled the time when he took charge of the Presidential Office and said that education is something that can lead India to its new golden age.

The President spoke about research and development opportunities at the universities at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The address was regarding the report submitted regarding 'State of Indian Universities in the Global Academic Rankings' that was submitted by O P Jindal Global University and Indian Centre for Academic Rankings and Excellence (ICARE).

He mentioned the importance that must be given to research in universities as the motivation to do research is currently very less. Stressing on the importance of Indian education, he said that he has always worked for the enhancement in the quality of higher education.

The president said that various Indian universities have improved their performance remarkably but appropriate amount of data has not been provided to the ranking agencies in order to come up with an accurate performance-based rank list.

He praised the work being done to enhance the standard of education at Indian varsities and said that he is very happy with the progress.

Speaking on the occasion, Amitabh Kant, Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog also said spoke on the occasion and said that the Indian universities lag behind in global rankings and the reason is the lack of quality of research, international students and faculty members.

NITI Aayog has been working to develop a scheme and a framework to recognize 10 public and 10 private Indian universities that will be offered greater autonomy and funding as an attempt to lead them to the level of globally recognized universities, he added.

C Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor of O P Jindal Global University, spoke in agreement with Amitabh Kant’s views and said that the education system faces some serious challenges regarding the lack of autonomy and regulation, lack of funding as well as the need for a well-qualified research faculty.

The report stated that India has five institutions listed among the top 50 and nine institutions in the top 100 list of the University Rankings Asia, 2016. India has also been accounted as the top 10 research producing nations at world level.

Performance has certainly increased as compared to 2015, as there are 44 institutions among the top 250 of the BRICS Rankings 2016 while in 2015 there were 31 institutions in the list. Also, Delhi University now ranks 41 that ranked 46 in 2015.
