Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, March 28 stressed upon his government’s commitment towards improving the standards of higher education institutes in the nation and make them reach qualitative perfection.

The Prime Minister was attending the ‘Bloomberg India Economic Forum’ in the capital and said, “We announced path-breaking reforms in the education sector. Improving the quality of learning will be my government's primary objective.”

Ten educational institutions, each from the private and public sectors would be provided a regulatory architecture that will give them “complete autonomy in academic, administrative and financial matters.

The proposed frame work to regulate the working of the institutes would not be the same as the already existing structures such as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the University Grants commission (UGC). This framework would help the institutes in becoming world class as far as the research and teaching is concerned.

Mr. Modi said, “We will provide additional resources for the next five years for the 10 public universities. This will eventually allow ordinary Indians access to affordable world-class degree courses.” In his opinion the education in India has progressed quite fairly as far as the teacher-pupil ratio is concerned.

The PM further stated, “The foundation of today's knowledge economy is the quality of its school-leavers. We will allocate an increasing share of resources under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan to quality. These funds will be used to promote local initiatives and innovations to improve learning outcomes.”
