A few days back,Directorate of College Education (DEC), Rajasthanissued orders to all the government colleges on implementing mandatorydress code (uniform). The board also directed the principals of colleges to send their suggestions on the colour of the uniform. However, the decision of DCE was not well received by the students, and many of them raised protest demanding the state government to revoke the decision. The officials of DCE alleged that the decision to implementuniform in government collegeswas recommended by student representatives.

Due to the widespread protest, the Chief Minister of Rajasthan,Vasundhara Rajedirected the DCE to make uniform/ dress code in colleges voluntary rather than compulsory. She assured that the state government will provide all the resources that are necessary for the students to excel in education. The state government is not intended to take the decisions against the wishes of students, she added.

Higher Education Minister of Rajasthan, Kiran Maheswari revealed that student representatives had sent a letter requesting to implement dress code/ uniform in colleges. They complained that outsiders are entering the campus, and it is becoming difficult to identify them since there is no uniform. Therefore, to curtail such kind of incidents, DEC issued an order mandating uniform in state-run colleges, she explained.

Even though implementing the dress code in colleges is a positive move, students must be left free to decide. The colleges or universities can give freedom to students in this regard by imposing some restrictions.
