SC on JEE Advanced Counselling: Go Ahead with IIT, NIT Engineering Admissions 2017

On July 10, 2017, the Supreme Court of India vacated the stay and gave clearance to go ahead with the conduction of counselling process for the admission in NITs and IITs. On July 7, 2017, Supreme Court had stayed the ongoing admission process in IITs and NITs following a dispute over grace marks awarded to candidates in JEE Advanced 2017 examination.
Justice Dipak Mishra while declaring the decision indicated that no High Court would entertain any plea on the issue. He further pointed that the court was inclined to vacate the order passed on July 7, 2017, and would not interfere with the admission and counselling process. The apex court also informed the concerned authorities that the mistakes in the printing of question paper and framing of questions should not happen again.

The Supreme Court of India sought the response of the Centre on June 30, 2017, against the grant of seven extra marks to all the candidates who had appeared for JEE Advanced 2017 examination. Due to the printing errors in Hindi medium question paper, the examination authority awarded grace marks to all the candidates. Three students seeking justice filed the petition. The petitioners claimed that the examination authority awarded grace marks to candidates who had not attempted those questions due to which the ranking has gone down.

However, Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) opposed the contention and indicated that the seats have already been allotted to 29,425 candidates. IITs further mentioned that the admission process for more than 36,000 students would be disturbed if the court stays the counselling process.
