SC Questions Appointment of Former Army Officer as VC for AMU
A bench comprising of Chief Justice T S Thakur and A M Khanwilkar said that the appointment of VC is not made according to the regulations of UGC.
The Supreme Court questioned the appointment of a Former Army Officer as the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. The apex court raised the issue on September 19, 2016. A bench comprising Chief Justice T S Thakur and A M Khanwilkar said that the appointment of VC is not made according to the regulations of University Grants Commission (UGC).
According to the guidelines of UGC, a VC must have at least ten years experience as a professor at a university. They pointed out that all the central universities are following the guidelines of UGC except AMU. Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah, VC of AMU neither has any professional experience in the academic domain nor fulfills the requirements prescribed by UGC.

Raju Ramachandran, Senior Advocate, for AMU opposed the explanation given by the bench and mentioned that the regulations of UGC are only meant for the appointment of teachers in central universities and not VC.
Mr. Salman Khurshid, a Senior Advocate, for Uddin Shah (who filed the petition) said that the terms of the appointment of the VC could not be dictated to the university. However, the alleged non-compliance of Regulations could lead to stoppage of funds granted by UGC. The court has postponed the matter for the next hearing on September 26, 2016.
