Seventh Pay Commission: Faculty at IITs & NITs Likely to Get a Pay Hike
- The faculty members at IITs, IIMs and other centrally funded institutes are likely to witness a salary hike of about Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 40,000.
- Teachers have been urging the government to implement the seventh pay commission recommendations as soon as possible.
The faculty at the NITs (National Institutes of Technology) and IITs (Indian Institutes of Technology) along with other centrally funded institutes across the country are likely to get a pay hike as the central government has decided to review their salaries by based on the recommendations of Seventh Central Pay Commission.
A senior official of HRD Ministry revealed that the faculty in these institutes may witnesses over 16%-20% hike in salaries. The faculty members are expected to see an increase of Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 40,000 per month based on their position and scale.

According to pay scales of sixth pay commission, the salary drawn by directors of Indian Institute of Science, Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institute of Industrial Engineering, Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research and Indian Institutes of Management was Rs. 80,000. Now, the salary for the directors of these institutes has been fixed to Rs. 2,25,000. Similarly, the directors whose existing pay as per sixth pay commission is Rs. 75,000 + Rs. 5,000 allowance shall be fixed to Rs. 2,10,000 (as per seventh pay commission).

HRD Ministry has issued an official circular regarding the revised pay scale to all the institutes across the country. The ministry further directed these institutes to discontinue with the non-performers. These institutes have recruited some of the faculty members on contractual basis (for three years). The performance of these faculty members will be assessed and the non-performers will either be asked to mend their ways or leave.
Due to the delay in the implementation of the seventh pay commission, teachers’ associations of different institutes have been planning to go on a strike.
