Shivaji University to Introduce CBCS for UG Programmes

Finally, Shivaji University has decided to introduce Choice Based Credit System or CBCS for UG courses from the academic session 2017-18. The varsity had constituted an implementation committee to interact and talk with principals of various affiliated colleges and submit their opinions. The committee visited various colleges and met their principals. The committee took suggestions on positive and negative impacts of implementing CBCS.

Now, the committee has submitted the report. According to the report, most of the college managements favoured implementing CBCS. The college managements felt that through the CBCS system, the students would have the flexibility to choose their preferred subjects of study.

Mr. D.T. Shikre, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Shivaji University revealed that the Academic Council and Management of the varsity would take the final decision on implementing CBCS. If the Academic Council does not take the final decision, the implantation of CBCS might postpone for the next academic session, i.e., 2018-19. However, he hoped that the Academic Council will give positive response to the proposal and approve it.

In April 2017, the University Grants Commission (UGC) directed all the varsities and colleges to submit data regarding the implementation of Choice Based Credit System (CBSE) in a uniform way. The UGC is planning to create a database regarding the implementation of CBCS by various varsities across the country.

In the year 2015, UGC had developed syllabi for 85 main line courses and 18 specialised courses. The UGC had also empowered universities with 30 percent choice to make changes/ amendments/ revise the courses suggested by it.
