Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has constituted a five-member panel to suggest recommendations for revising Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS). The CBCS of SPPU will undergo major changes, particularly for the Science courses. The authorities of the varsity feel that students require additional credits to earn their degrees. Therefore, the varsity has appointed a committee, headed by Professor of Molecular Biology at SPPU, Dr. Saroj Ghaskadbi. The five-member committee will study the CBCS of SPPU, compare it with CBCS of other universities and make necessary suggestions to revamp the existing CBCS.

Pro Vice-Chancellor of SPPU, N S Umrani revealed that the Academic Council of the varsity had approved the proposal to revamp CBCS and appoint a five-member committee for the same. SPPU move comes with the directive of the University Grants Commission, which informed the institutes to offer five short-courses to students, each of two credits.

Head of the Panel, Dr. Saroj Ghaskadbi pointed that the two credit courses would be implemented for the five subjects and it is mandatory for the students to take up these short courses and obtain the prescribed credits. Most probably, the short courses will be offered in the subjects like Cyber Security and Human Rights, he added.

Explaining the problems in the implementation of five short-courses, Dr. Ghaskadbi mentioned that Science students would face additional burden due to the implementation of short-term courses. Already, science students will have to earn 100 credits for obtaining a degree. With the addition of five short courses, students need to earn 110 credits, which is an overburden to them. Implementation of compulsory short courses to commerce or social sciences students will not be a problem, as these students need to earn only 64 credits to obtain the degree, he explained.

A noted academician pointed that SPPU’s criteria for credits are higher than other popular universities such as Banaras Hindu University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and the University of Delhi. 100 credits for science courses are too high and it is essential to revise the existing CBCS system of SPPU, he suggested.
