Good and Services Tax or GST has become on the major issues/agenda for discussion in India after its launch on July 1, 2017. Some of the experts were of the opinion that implanting GST is a positive move as it will eliminate indirect taxes.

With a view to work towards implementing the GST, leading university of the country, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) is likely to include GST as one of the topics in the curriculum of B.Com, M.Com & other related courses. Besides SPPU, other independent colleges in the city are also planning to include GST in the curriculum. Experts felt that GST must be introduced in accounting and taxation components for commerce students.

Currently, SPPU is in plans to constitute a committee for studying possible to include GST in the curriculum. The committee will not only include the professors of commerce but also industry experts and chartered accountants. The expert's committee will design the new addition to the curriculum.

Dean of Commerce & Management Faculty at SPPU revealed that the initial process for the same has already been started. He indicated that direct and indirect taxation is an important aspect of various commerce courses. Initially, the expert committee will review the existing syllabus and design the new syllabus based on GST aspects. The entire process of designing the curriculum is expected to complete in 2-3 months. The varsity is expected to implement the new curriculum with GST aspects by the next semester.

Apart from SPPU, various autonomous colleges in the city have decided to introduce GST as one of the topics in final year curriculum of B.Com course. Few colleges like Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce is planning to launch a certificate course on GST for the interested students. However, non-autonomous colleges were of the opinion to launch certificate or add-on courses on GST.

Recently, few chartered accountancy institutes started refresher/ certificate training for professionals as well as CA students. The training programme has been receiving a tremendous response from students and professionals.
