The central government's decision on making NEET or National Eligibility cum Entrance Test mandatory for admission to medical courses made most of the private schools across Tamil Nadu to adopt CBSE syllabus. Currently, most of the schools who are following the state syllabus have launched coaching classes for Class XII students for NEET examination. Special classes or extra hours are being conducted to train the students for the examination.

However, the trend is not going well with government schools across the state. Even though MCI granted permission to conduct NEET in eight vernacular languages including Tamil, the students of government schools are facing difficulty in preparing for the examination. Even though there is a quota for the state government in admissions, the major question is how these students prepare for NEET examination.

It is clear that students of CBSE schools and private schools which are offering coaching classes for students might do well in the examinations. However, the students of government schools lack coaching, and the date of examination is approaching. These schools follow state syllabus and it is difficult for a student from a government school to qualify in CBSE-centred NEET examination.

The education department is still mulling over imparting training to the students. They neither took any decision nor held discussions with state government. One of the teachers was of the opinion that it is difficult for a student from a government school to qualify in NEET if the training is initiated at this juncture.

Some of the government schools in Tamil Nadu are taking the help of alumni network to prepare students for NEET.
