Students of DU Law Faculty Begin Indefinite Hunger Strike Again

The students of Delhi University’s Law Faculty started an indefinite hunger strike again outside the Dean’s office on October 13, 2016. The students are protesting as the management has not fulfilled their earlier proposed demands. Four law students went on an indefinite hunger strike and ended it after they received a written assurance from the college authorities that their demands regarding promotion and restoration of supplementary exams and evaluation will be fulfilled soon.

Amit Tanwar, President of Delhi Universty Students’ Union, locked Ved Kumari, Dean of Law Faculty inside her office and allegedly broke a window next to it as she refused to speak to Vice-Chancellor regarding the protest by the students. She also mentioned that the demands claimed by the students are defective and could not be fulfilled.

Enraged with the policy of authorities, Amit Tanwar also joined the protest and supported Mithilesh Jaiswal and Brajesh Singh ofCampus Law Centrewho went on an indefinite hunger strike. Amit mentioned that he would also join the hunger strike if the authorities do not fulfill the demand. He stated that the Dean of Law Faculty responded in a rude manner when questioned about the future of students who failed in the examination.

Mithilesh, a second-year student, mentioned that they would not stop the strike until the authorities release a notification favouring their demands. Brajesh Singh pointed out that the Law Faculty failed to appoint permanent staff members in the past ten years and 80% the existing staff are ad hoc faculty members. He questioned the authorities on how could students secure better marks if there are no permanent staff members.
